Introduction from Chris Adams, Health Information Management

My name is Chris Adams and I am the new HIM Manager for Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center and have been with HCA for 13 years in HIM. I have over 17 years of HIM experience and have been involved in many different leadership positions since 2005, most recently as the HIM Coordinator for the Johnston Willis Campus of CJW. I am looking forward to working with you all and building better physician relationships here at Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center.

On another note: Due to the bylaws of the hospital (pg. 66, sec 6.6.5), the State and JCAHO rules and regulations, physicians with any delinquent records over 30 days should be suspended. The physician is not reported to the state or anywhere else, but will remain on suspension until all delinquent records are completed. This will impact physician admitting privileges and scheduling surgeries. Patient care is of chief importance for all of us but I wanted to send a quick reminder that this is also a part of that care.

You will begin seeing emails from me regarding completion of records in Meditech and the hCare Portal that are older than 30 days for the next couple of months. Those who fall on the list will get a friendly reminder until I have time to review records and start the suspension process. I ask that you please comply and let me know if there is anything I can do to make this process easier. I can be reached at the number or email below.

Lastly, ICD 10 is coming and we have started our “jump off meetings” with our teams to try and make this transition easier for everyone. I will continue to communicate through the newsletters and our team leaders to ensure everyone is getting the same information.

We have been approved to offer education to the hospital medical staff, including non-employed affiliated physicians and providers who are credentialed with our hospitals and their office staff. Under the Stark compliance training exception, we are able to offer ICD-10 education on areas that focus on facility-based activities as long as the physician/provider is actively credentialed for an HCA facility. In addition, we are able to extend this same education to the physician office staff (including mid-levels). If a physician is not on a facility’s medical staff, such as a physician that only refers patients to the hospital, the courses cannot be offered to them or their physician office staff.  Please let us know if you have any questions or need further clarification.
